Some people see Queenstown as the capital of ‘extreme’ and Colin Walkington was certainly after a piece of the action when he made the Wakatipu his home.
After running his own successful audio business in Invercargill for 25 years, Colin and wife Cheryl decided it was time to move north and indulge in some new hobbies.
Settling into Arrowtown in 2004, it was time to sample what the Wakatipu had to offer. Colin purchased a Toyota Surf and, with Cheryl as his co-pilot, joined the Shotover 4WD club. While their first 4WD met a watery demise, his love of the sport has grown and he has been an active member of the club ever since. He’s also partial to a spot of sailing, having learned the sport 20 years ago in the Bluff harbour. These days Colin floats about on the Wakatipu on his beloved Trimaran yacht.
The spectacular landscapes of Queenstown provide a bit of food for the soul, although Colin prefers to capture them with the lens. Along with his photography, he dabbles in a spot of website design on his trusty Mac (a self-taught computer enthusiast).
Colin’s long-time Southland business and personal contacts have meant his transition into real estate has been a comfortable one. “I’m always bumping into old associates and friends up here, it’s almost just a natural follow-on to my audio business,” he says.
Colin's time in the business world has provided him with the foundations to achieve great results and with his friendly, down-to-earth personality, he says he’s keen to help others realise the great lifestyle and freedom that Queenstown offers.
First high-quality audio equipment, now real estate. Colin reckons that he’s “still dealing with top shelf products and a top shelf team.”
That’s what we like to hear.

Under pressure to find a property in a very narrow time frame, Colin was one of the many real estate agents I met whilst in Queenstown. He was also the most sincere and down-to-earth, and was simply a pleasure to spend time with. I am forever grateful to him for encouraging me to look outside my remit of an apartment in Queenstown. As a result we became the new owners of a holiday house in Kelvin Heights just a few weeks later. Colin was a calm and considerate intermediary during the phone auction and gave us invaluable advice on local contractors, tradesmen, and other professionals both before and after the purchase. He has continued to be a friendly, helpful contact in Queenstown and we thank him sincerely for all his help.
